Snow-covered landscape in Srinagar during winter

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced a chilling winter night as temperatures plunged to a frigid -2.1°C, marking the coldest night this season. The Meteorological (MeT) Department reported that on November 16, the chill enveloped the city, foreshadowing the harshness of winter.

In addition to Srinagar’s record low, Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in the Kashmir Valley, reported even colder conditions. The mercury there dropped to a bone-numbing -3.8°C, making it the coldest spot in the region.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MeT Department, advised that no wet weather is expected in the near future. He elaborated that night temperatures will likely remain stable until November 17, indicating that the Valley should prepare for continued cold spells.

Once the harsh temperatures set in, residents and visitors alike face challenges. Frost formation across parts of Srinagar and other areas created picturesque but icy mornings, leading to caution amongst commuters and drivers. The onset of frost signifies not only scenic views but also the beginning of severe winter conditions.

A recent statement from Dr. Ahmad indicated a potential slight warming trend shortly after November 17, lasting for two to three days before temperatures may dip once again. As winter progresses, many anticipate the beauty of snow-capped mountains, which typically enhances tourism in the region.

Tourism operators in the Valley are bracing for an influx of visitors seeking to experience the enchanting winter landscape. This season has already ignited interest due to the exceptionally low temperatures, compelling many to prepare for winter sports and sightseeing.

With the ongoing cold spell, locals and businesses also urge visitors to dress warmly and prioritize safety on icy roads. Authorities encourage everyone to stay updated with weather forecasts as they navigate the chilly conditions.

As December approaches, Srinagar and the broader Jammu and Kashmir region will continue to be monitored closely by the MeT. The cold conditions remind residents that winter is firmly upon the Valley, bringing both challenges and opportunities.
