The Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, called for collective efforts to preserve the rich tribal heritage during the Tribal Mela held in Sagra, Mendhar, Poonch. This vibrant event, organized in collaboration with the District Administration, took place today and attracted a large number of locals.
Speaking at the event, Rana stressed the importance of protecting tribal values that define the identity of communities in the Pir Panjal region. He asserted that development must not come at the cost of cultural erosion, advocating for a balanced approach that marries progress with tradition. “Unchecked modern influences threaten to dilute our customs and moral frameworks,” he warned.
The Minister reaffirmed the Omar Abdullah Government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development, aiming to create a resilient, self-reliant tribal society anchored in its traditions. He commended the efforts of the Tribal Affairs Department and local administration for their hard work in organizing the Tribal Mela, deeming it a significant step towards development with dignity.
The Mela showcased vibrant displays of tribal heritage, food, and traditional wisdom. Locals flocked to the numerous stalls that offered indigenous cuisines, medicinal plants, and traditional healthcare knowledge. A notable feature of the event was the free medical camp, where residents received vital health consultations and services.
This gathering not only highlighted the region’s rich culture but also exemplified the government’s commitment to ensuring development policies remain connected to the lived experiences of tribal communities. Through such events, the administration aims to celebrate both the cultural and historical significance of the tribes.
The occasion also witnessed the presence of prominent figures including Chairperson DDC Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, various senior officials, and a significant number of locals who participated in the festivities.
By advocating for the preservation of tribal heritages and underlining the risks of cultural dilution, Rana’s remarks resonate profoundly with ongoing discussions about how to integrate modernity in a way that honors and protects the intrinsic values of tribal societies. The Mendhar Tribal Mela stands as a testament to this vision, bringing together the community in a celebration of their roots and identity.
