India upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to a full embassy on Friday, a crucial move toward re-establishing diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. This announcement came during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.
This upgrade signifies India’s renewed commitment to engage with a country it has historic ties with, after withdrawing its officials post the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Despite the withdrawal, India redeployed a technical team in June 2022, marking the beginning of limited operations in Kabul.
Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the visit by the Afghan Foreign Minister, stating, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He emphasized India’s vested interest in the development and progress of Afghanistan as a supportive neighbour.
With this upgrade, India plans to focus on humanitarian assistance, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation. Jaishankar acknowledged the Taliban’s efforts to address India’s security concerns, especially following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
In addressing the need for collaborative efforts, Jaishankar asserted, “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.” His assertion highlights the shared challenges of both nations regarding cross-border terrorism, necessitating a united front.
Muttaqi echoed India’s role as a critical regional partner and expressed gratitude for the humanitarian assistance provided by India. He emphasized Kabul’s intent to bolster cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and educational sectors, reflecting a mutual desire for growth.
