Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, aiming to position Gulmarg as Asia’s premier destination for international events. This world-class facility is expected to transform the landscape of tourism, culture, and business events in Jammu and Kashmir.

Details of the Gulmarg Convention Centre

Constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the Convention Centre is designed to promote MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions). Important figures including Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, and Additional Chief Secretary Tourism, Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma, were present at the inauguration.

Expanding Gulmarg’s Tourism Infrastructure

In addition to the convention centre, Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop that will further enhance Gulmarg’s already robust tourism infrastructure. This initiative aims to facilitate visitors who are eager to experience skiing, sledging, and other winter activities.

Prioritizing Maintenance and Usage

In his address, Abdullah stressed the importance of not just constructing new facilities but ensuring they are effectively used and maintained. “It is the easiest thing to build four walls. The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance,” he emphasized. The Chief Minister noted that while the project was completed within budget, further furnishing is necessary for operational use.

Focusing on MICE Tourism and Evening Activities

Omar Abdullah highlighted the Centre’s potential to serve as a hub for MICE tourism, weddings, and high-profile international events. “I want that one day, when we hear about Davos again and again, then people recognize it as Asian Davos,” he said, wishing for Gulmarg’s significant annual events that draw global participants.

He also noted the necessity for evening activities for tourists who may feel limited after daytime sports. Proposals include a coffee shop, restaurant, and digital cinema for vibrant night experiences.

Utilizing the Centre for Government Events

The Chief Minister urged government departments to take advantage of this facility for meetings and training programs, maximizing its use while waiting for private sector interest to grow. “Education, health, social welfare, and other departments can hold programmes here,” Abdullah stated.

A Landmark Addition to Gulmarg’s Profile

Concluding his speech, Abdullah congratulated the NBCC and Gulmarg Development Authority for their contributions to this “landmark addition” to the region’s tourism profile. Proper management of the Gulmarg Convention Centre is projected to not only bring international conferences but also create a vibrant space for cultural tourism.

As Gulmarg envisions becoming Asia’s Davos, the future looks bright for this exquisite destination nestled in the Himalayas. The inauguration of the Convention Centre is a crucial step towards achieving that ambitious goal.
