In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn who weighed an unprecedented 6 kilograms at birth. This case marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at this esteemed institution.
The infant was born on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother who faced complications with the birthing process. Shortly after delivery, the newborn exhibited severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life, prompting an immediate transfer to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Upon admission to the NICU, the medical team recognized the infant’s large-for-gestational-age status and the urgent need for specialized treatment. They promptly initiated advanced respiratory support to address the critical condition. The newborn underwent rigorous monitoring, focusing on respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and overall neurological activity.
Over the subsequent days, the infant showed remarkable improvement. Gradual weaning of respiratory support was possible as the baby’s condition stabilized. This encouraging progress included maintaining stable independent breathing for the final 72 hours before discharge, with normal oxygenation and temperature regulation.
Importantly, throughout this period, the newborn exhibited no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation, further demonstrating recovery. As a result of consistent clinical stability, he was discharged in a healthy condition, with recommendations for routine follow-up care.
This successful management required teamwork and expertise, orchestrated under the guidance of the HOD of Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib. Faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma played pivotal roles, alongside a dedicated team of senior and junior residents.
Recognition is also due to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care were crucial to the baby’s recovery, showcasing their unwavering commitment to pediatric health.
This noteworthy achievement highlights not only the advanced neonatal expertise within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda but also the institution’s ongoing dedication to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children throughout the region.
