National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Monday praised the Jammu and Kashmir government for reopening tourist destinations and revitalizing tourism efforts following the tragic Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives on April 22.

Abdullah extended greetings to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and enthusiasts worldwide on World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27, reaffirming the region’s unmatched natural beauty and cultural heritage.

“As the world acknowledges the profound significance of tourism, this day marks a moment of reflection and renewed commitment for Jammu and Kashmir,” said Abdullah. He highlighted tourism’s role not only as an economic activity but as a vital source of livelihood for many families.

In particular, he credited the Omar Abdullah-led administration for swiftly addressing tourism concerns during challenging times, notably after the Pahalgam attack. Their response helped restore confidence among tourists and reestablished J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

“These efforts have laid a strong foundation for the sector’s sustainable and long-term growth,” confessed the NC chief.

Abdullah warmly welcomed the reopening of tourism hotspots, urging officials to ensure inclusive development across the region. He insisted that places like Chenab and Pir Panjal also deserve significant attention in tourism initiatives.

On Friday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the reopening of several tourist sites that had been shut down post-attack. This decisive action reflects the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy and ensuring visitor safety.

Abdullah emphasized the necessity for sustainable tourism models that safeguard the environment while celebrating the local culture. “Let this World Tourism Day remind us of our obligation to cultivate a peaceful and progressive Jammu and Kashmir,” he stressed.

He added, “In this ideal landscape, every visitor should feel cherished, and every citizen must benefit from a tourism-led economy.”
