NEW DELHI: On November 1, the air quality in Delhi remains a major concern as it holds a ‘poor’ status, with an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 251, a noticeable uptick from 218 recorded just a day prior, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The CPCB data reveals that eight monitoring stations reported AQI levels categorized as ‘very poor.’ The rising pollution levels can be attributed to various factors including vehicular emissions, construction dust, and seasonal burning practices prevalent in the region.

Among the monitoring stations, Wazirpur registered the highest AQI, peaking at 333, as reported by the CPCB’s Sameer app. Such figures have raised alarms among environmentalists and health officials, who urge residents to take necessary precautions.

Local experts emphasize that poor air quality can significantly impact health, particularly for vulnerable groups including children and the elderly. With winter approaching, atmospheric conditions may worsen, trapping pollutants close to the ground.

“The ongoing construction activities and increasing vehicular traffic contribute substantially to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi,” said Dr. Arvind Sharma, an environmental scientist at the Indian Institute of Technology. “Immediate action is critical to mitigate health risks associated with prolonged exposure to poor air quality.”

The deteriorating situation underscores the need for strong regulatory measures and public awareness campaigns to combat air pollution in the national capital. Various initiatives, including increased monitoring and stricter emissions regulations, have been suggested to address these challenges.

In light of the current air quality conditions, the government urges residents to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors where possible. Additionally, it is advisable to wear masks that filter out fine particulate matter when going outdoors.

The community can stay informed about air quality levels by accessing real-time data updates from the CPCB and other government sources. As the situation evolves, it remains imperative for Delhi residents to actively participate in efforts to improve the city’s air quality and safeguard their health.

As the government gears up for potential long-term solutions, immediate measures to curb pollution during this critical period are essential for public health and environmental sustainability.
