The Congress party on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, citing the alarming rise in unemployment as a pressing national issue. Leaders of the party accuse the Prime Minister of staying ‘always in election mode,’ distracted by new speeches rather than addressing the grave concerns faced by citizens.
In a robust statement, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, outlined the detrimental impact of the last 11 years of Modi’s administration on various segments of Indian society. Ramesh asserted that ‘students, youth, farmers, labourers, workers, shopkeepers, employees, and businessmen’ all suffer under this regime. He described current inflation levels as soaring, the rupee’s diminishing value as alarming, and the wealth gap as widening, particularly burdening poor and middle-class households.
Ramesh pointed to statistics from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), revealing that India’s unemployment rate surged to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest figure in six months. He emphasized that millions experienced job losses across multiple sectors, notably stating, ‘Over 90 lakh people have lost their jobs in the construction industry alone, while 25 lakh salaried positions have dwindled.’
This spate of alarming data, Ramesh noted, has emerged consistently over the past decade, yet the Modi administration appears unresponsive to the deepening crisis. He expressed his belief that the Prime Minister remains disconnected from the dire straits of the nation’s youth and citizens.
Ramesh’s direct remarks addressed PM Modi: “Always in election mode, he crafts new narratives to divert public attention from the unemployment crisis gripping our country.” This rhetoric underscores a growing sentiment among opposition leaders who believe that citizens deserve substantial economic action over mere political talk.
