Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also leads the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), has announced a funding of ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfers to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. This announcement coincided with expressions of sorrow over a tragic bus accident in Saudi Arabia that involved Indian pilgrims.
Officials confirmed that the sanctioned amount is allocated to all Assistant Labour Commissioners, ensuring immediate transfers into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers in the unorganised sector.
The Labour Department specified that the financial assistance covers multiple flagship welfare schemes, including:
- Education support;
- Disability assistance;
- Aid for chronic illnesses;
- Support for the next of kin of deceased workers;
- Marriage assistance;
- Meritorious awards for children of registered workers.
During the 22nd meeting of the JKBOCWWB held in July, Chief Minister Abdullah emphasized the necessity for a broader and more inclusive definition of ‘construction worker.’ He aims to ensure that all vulnerable labourers reap the benefits of welfare measures implemented by the government.
Abdullah reinforced the government’s dedication to exploring innovative policy mechanisms that expand coverage to workers and guarantee their financial security. He also expressed an intention to align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated, reaffirming his commitment to protecting labour rights and dignity.
Moreover, the Chief Minister’s day took a somber turn when he expressed deep sorrow regarding a tragic accident that occurred early this morning in Medina, Saudi Arabia. A bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims met with a devastating collision.
Abdullah conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. Initial reports revealed that the bus was transporting 46 Indian pilgrims when it collided with a tanker while journeying from Mecca to Medina. The accident resulted in the untimely deaths of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
