Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra strongly opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists proposed by the Election Commission (EC) in Kerala during her recent two-day visit to Wayanad. She stated the Congress party would challenge this move both inside and outside Parliament.
Priyanka accused the Election Commission of employing the SIR process as a mechanism to manipulate electoral rolls, deeming it a tactic to undermine the democratic process. “The Election Commission is planning to carry out SIR of voter lists in many states, including Kerala, and we will strongly oppose it,” Priyanka said. Citing her party’s experiences in Bihar, she expressed concerns about the integrity of elections nationwide.
She remarked, “Given how they have done it in Bihar, we have fought against it in Parliament and outside it. We will continue to fight against it everywhere.” This staunch opposition reflects the Congress party’s ongoing efforts to ensure fair electoral practices across India.
Priyanka described the SIR exercise as “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the election,” asserting that the method used in Bihar threatens the foundational principles of democracy. She highlighted, “We have seen what they did in Bihar and how they implemented SIR there. If that is what they are going to do in every state, then it is an affront to democracy, and we have to fight it.” Her statements echo a wider concern among many political factions regarding the transparency of the electoral roll revision process.
During her visit, Priyanka inaugurated the newly constructed Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary building in Ernad, Malappuram district, which falls under her constituency. This initiative signifies Congress’s focus on improving healthcare facilities in the region.
Priyanka arrived at Karipur airport and immediately traveled to Wayanad by road, with plans to inaugurate several development projects aimed at bolstering local infrastructure.
