Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, addressed the Legislative House today, stating clearly that there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. This assurance follows a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Mir Saifullah, who expressed concerns over the availability of essential food supplies in these remote regions.

Mir Saifullah highlighted the challenges faced by residents of Keran and Jamgund, noting that heavy snowfall often isolates these areas for nearly six months during winter. Such conditions frequently lead to shortages of essential commodities, raising alarm among the local populace.

In his response, Minister Sharma detailed the government’s proactive measures to prevent food shortages in these inaccessible areas. He explained that the government conducts advance dumping and supply of food grains under various schemes for an eight-month period, from November to June, well ahead of the winter onset and anticipated road closures.

Providing further data, Sharma noted that for Jamgund, the total requirement for food grains during the period of November 2025 to June 2026 is 536.14 quintals. Impressively, 100% of this required quantity has already reached the area, ensuring that local needs are met.

Likewise, in Keran, the required amount stands at 2774.43 quintals. Currently, 800 quintals have been delivered, with an additional 346.80 quintals dumped in advance at designated locations. The Minister assured that the remaining quantity would be transported and stocked by or before October 31, 2025, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing uninterrupted food supply to all remote and border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma’s declarations reassure the local populace, who depends heavily on government provisions, especially during adverse weather conditions. By ensuring food availability, the government aims to alleviate fears and enhance living standards in these distant areas.

This incident showcases the importance of governmental interventions in maintaining food security, particularly in regions susceptible to isolation due to severe weather. As the winter approaches, the government’s preemptive strategies in food supply become crucial for the welfare of the residents in Kupwara.
