Geetanjali Angmo visiting Sonam Wangchuk in Jodhpur Jail

Geetanjali Angmo, wife of noted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, visited her husband at Jodhpur Central Jail on Tuesday, where he remains detained following the September 24 Leh violence. Angmo was accompanied by lawyer Ritam Khare during the visit.

Angmo confirmed that Wangchuk’s legal team has accessed his detention order, which they plan to challenge in court. This document outlines the allegations against Wangchuk and the justification for invoking the National Security Act (NSA).

In a previous visit, Wangchuk’s brother Tsetan Dorje also met him in jail, alongside his lawyer Mustafa Haji. Haji noted on X that Wangchuk insists on an independent judicial inquiry into the tragic deaths of four individuals during last month’s protests in Leh.

“Wangchuk has made it clear that he is ready to remain incarcerated until such an inquiry is established,” Haji said.

Amid mounting legal pressures, Angmo has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting her husband’s immediate release. The court is set to hear the plea on October 14.

Wangchuk, who is famed for his advocacy of environmental and social issues in Ladakh, was detained under the NSA amid violent clashes during a protest advocating for statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the Union Territory in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Initially, the activist was taken to Delhi before being transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail on September 26.
