Tariq Hameed Karra speaks to reporters about Leh violence

Tariq Hameed Karra, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), demanded a thorough judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24, which tragically led to the loss of four lives. Karra advocated for the investigation to be conducted by a sitting High Court judge or, if that’s not feasible, by a retired judge of integrity. His remarks came during a press conference held on Thursday in Srinagar.

Karra stressed the importance of ensuring that such violent incidents do not recur. He stated, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” His call for transparency highlights growing concerns over governance and accountability in the region.

While addressing the media, Karra also paid homage to renowned leaders, Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, coinciding with their birth anniversaries. He highlighted their enduring leadership and philosophy, invoking Gandhi’s vision of a self-reliant India. “Gandhian philosophy continues to inspire the world and is even commemorated at the United Nations,” he pointed out.

In light of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Karra noted that the decisions regarding seat sharing and alliances would be made by the Congress leadership at the central level. He confirmed that senior leader Digvijay Singh has been appointed as an observer to facilitate these discussions, ensuring that the party remains strategically aligned.

Furthermore, responding to inquiries about Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra asserted that he should be permitted to participate in the Assembly session. He drew a parallel to the case of Engineer Rashid, who was allowed to attend Parliament while incarcerated in Tihar Jail. He stated, “By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.” This comment underscores the growing advocacy for equitable treatment of legislators, regardless of their political affiliations.

Karra’s vocal advocacy for justice following the Leh violence reflects a broader demand for governmental accountability in Jammu and Kashmir. His call for an impartial judicial investigation aims to restore public trust and transparency in the region’s governance.
