RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed the annual Vijayadashami event in Nagpur on Thursday, reiterating that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has maintained its focus on ‘vyakti nirman’ (character building) instead of engaging in politics during its century-long journey. This stance reflects the organisation’s commitment to its core mission despite various temptations.

In a pivotal speech marking the RSS centenary, Bhagwat said his message drew from the insights accumulated over the last 100 years. He called for a gradual reform in the global order, stressing the importance of a step-by-step approach to prevent societal upheaval. Bhagwat stated, “India must present a development model based on a holistic and integrated outlook, rooted in dharma, and offer it to the world.”

Bhagwat further elaborated on the concept of dharma, stating it transcends worship and rituals, serving as a fundamental principle that connects all facets of society. He indicated that social transformation could be achieved through living examples of integrity, selflessness, and social leadership—values that RSS aims to foster through its various shakhas.

The RSS Chief highlighted that over the past century, the organisation turned down multiple invitations to venture into politics, choosing instead to concentrate on running shakhas aimed at character-building, which he deems essential for sustainable social change. “Vyakti nirman is the right path,” Bhagwat declared, outlining it as a collective experience that has shaped the mission of RSS.

Emphasising India’s rich diversity of languages, faiths, lifestyles, and traditions, Bhagwat asserted that pluralism should be seen as a strength. “All communities, including those who adopted foreign religions, are part of the larger Indian identity,” he noted, advocating for harmony, mutual respect, and the rejection of violence amongst different groups.

Bhagwat also condemned acts of hooliganism and attempts to incite communal discord. He urged law enforcement agencies to act decisively and without bias against any wrongdoing. In a call to action, he encouraged society, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant and organised, intervening when necessary to maintain peace and harmony.

The centenary celebration not only marked a significant milestone for the RSS but also highlighted its ongoing commitment to social values and national identity. As India continues to navigate complex social dynamics, Bhagwat’s message resonates as a rallying cry for character-driven leadership and cohesive national identity.
