The Congress party has called upon the Government of India to address the urgent and legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh following violent protests for statehood on Wednesday that resulted in four deaths and injured over 90 individuals. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the need for immediate action rather than just discussions.
In a statement released on social media platform X, Ramesh expressed the growing discontent among Ladakh residents since the formation of the Union Territory six years ago. The promises made at that time have remained largely unfulfilled, deepening frustrations among the local populace.
“The dreams and expectations of the people of Ladakh have given way to massive disappointment,” said Ramesh. He pointed to severe threats to land and employment rights, as well as the erosion of local governance structures.
Local councils and elected bodies have increasingly been overshadowed by the administration led by the Lieutenant Governor and centralized bureaucratic control. Ramesh criticized the government’s pattern of holding meetings without substantive outcomes regarding the community’s demands for protection under the Sixth Schedule and the establishment of an elected legislative assembly.
“Great uncertainty looms over Ladakh due to China’s aggressive maneuvers along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), exacerbated by the Prime Minister’s June 19, 2020, comments that provided a perceived endorsement to China’s actions,” he stated. Ramesh underscored the strategic importance of Ladakh, noting its cultural, economic, and ecological significance to the nation.
“Our community has always been fiercely proud of our Indian identity. The distress felt by Ladakhis should deeply resonate with the central government,” he highlighted. “It is time for action that fulfills their legitimate aspirations fully and expediently.”
Following protests that erupted into violence on Wednesday, an uneasy calm returned to the region on Thursday. Authorities imposed a strict curfew in Leh, limiting movement and maintaining order as police and paramilitary forces were deployed. At least 50 individuals have faced detention as law enforcement responded to the disorder.
The protests were organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which called for extended rights under the Sixth Schedule and formal statehood for Ladakh. These demands reflect a broader sentiment that Ladakhis are seeking recognition and autonomy within the framework of the Indian constitution.
The current upheaval and resultant crackdown have drawn attention to the wider implications of governance in Union Territories and the importance of ensuring that local voices are heard and respected in the political discourse of India. The Congress party’s assertive stance may signal a rekindled focus on Ladakh as a critical issue in Indian politics.
