A day after violent clashes led to the tragic deaths of four people and injuries to over 90 others in Leh, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta convened a crucial security review meeting on Thursday. The session aimed to assess the current situation and reinforce the need for heightened vigilance to safeguard peace in the Union Territory.
Gupta underscored the significance of peace and unity during these turbulent times, stating, “Peace and harmony are the foundation of Ladakh’s identity. Together, we must protect this legacy and ensure the safety and security of every citizen.”
The unrest stemmed from a shutdown called by a faction of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which demands proactive negotiations with the government regarding extending the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and the grant of statehood to Ladakh.
In a post on social media platform X, the LG office confirmed that the lieutenant governor led a high-level security meeting, emphasizing “the need for heightened vigilance, seamless inter-agency coordination, and proactive measures” to maintain peace and public order.
The meeting attracted several high-ranking officials, including Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, DGP S D Singh Jamwal, and senior leadership from the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
During the discussions, Gupta reaffirmed that citizens’ safety remains the administration’s top priority. He urged officials to establish a continuous monitoring mechanism to stay ahead of potential challenges, said a spokesman from Raj Bhavan.
Gupta advocated for close collaboration between civil authorities and security agencies to ensure a swift response to any incidents. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening intelligence networks and promoting community involvement in preserving harmony.
“Ladakh has always been celebrated for its peace, harmony, and brotherhood,” Gupta reflected. “However, certain anti-social elements are trying to disturb this atmosphere. I urge the people not to fall prey to such attempts. We must maintain peace at all costs.”
While emphasizing development, the lieutenant governor pointed out the region’s progress since it became a Union Territory in 2019, largely under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gupta stated, “Our focus is on building a prosperous, peaceful, and developed Ladakh. No disruptive force will be allowed to derail this progress.”
He reassured the public of the government’s unwavering support, appealing against violence. Gupta stated, “Every life is precious, and we are ensuring the best possible medical care for those injured.”
Providing a detailed medical response, Gupta noted that 90 individuals were admitted to SNM Hospital in Leh following Wednesday’s chaos. Among them, three were pronounced dead, while others experienced varying degrees of injuries: seven critically hurt, 20 with major trauma, and 61 sustaining minor injuries.“While 50 patients were discharged the same day, seven underwent major surgeries, and 45 blood transfusions were completed,” he added.
For critical care, one patient was airlifted to New Delhi via an Indian Air Force aircraft for advanced treatment. Currently, 18 patients remain hospitalized, and 11 have been discharged. Gupta confirmed that the deceased’s families received their loved ones’ bodies following all legal formalities.
The LG’s directives led the Leh deputy commissioner to visit SNM Hospital, ensuring the well-being of the injured and confirming that all possible assistance is rendered to the victims and their families.
The administration’s robust response aims to stabilize the region amidst rising tensions and ensure that the long-standing peace and communal harmony in Ladakh remain intact. The call for unity and vigilance echoes a deep-rooted commitment to preserve the cultural identity and safety of all who call Ladakh home.
