SRINAGAR, Oct 30: The Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmad Rana, confirmed that discussions regarding a policy for regularization of daily-wagers are actively ongoing. The announcement came in response to a query from Legislator Dr. Sajjad Shafi during a session in the Legislative Assembly.

Minister Rana stated that the Jal Shakti Department faces a significant staff shortage, primarily due to the retirement of numerous field employees. To clarify, he revealed that there are currently 125 Assistant Linemen employed, while only eight lineman positions remain open within the PHE Sub-Division Uri.

Despite the staffing challenges, Rana assured that the department has implemented interim measures to maintain a consistent water supply to residents. This strategy includes the internal redeployment of existing personnel, which encompasses both regular employees and daily-wagers, until the department can fill vacant positions through formal recruitment, staff promotions, or redeployments as per departmental guidelines.

Minister Rana emphasized the vital role daily-wagers play in ensuring the smooth operation of Water Supply Schemes (WSS) across the region. He highlighted that the regularization of employment would not only enhance job security for these workers but also improve service delivery standards within the department.

This initiative reflects a broader recognition of the need for more robust workforce management in public service sectors such as water supply. By contemplating a policy for the regularization of daily wagers, the government seeks to address long-standing employment issues and operational inefficiencies.

As the discussions progress, stakeholders from various levels anticipate a more structured approach to employment in the Jal Shakti Department. This includes not just the regularization of daily-wagers but also a comprehensive evaluation of staff needs to better serve the population.

Through these efforts, officials hope to establish a more reliable and efficient water supply system while ensuring that staff are adequately supported and recognized for their contributions to public welfare.
